QM2 succeeded Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) as the flagship of the Cunard Line, with the retirement of the QE2 from active service in 2008. Her designer, Stephen Payne, is in a unique position to give an unrivalled insight into the design, construction and operation of this giant of the seas. He has interviewed key QM2 personnel for this book and his revealing narrative is supported by almost 300 photographs and illustrations. Daryl C 3.0 out of 5 stars On the upside, it contains a large number of nice photographs of the ship under construction and some interesting insights into the design process. Much of it reads like a Cunard puff piece, complete with posed photographs of smiling passengers and vacated public spaces. The final chapter goes into a little detail about how the ship's propulsion plant works, but for ship buff like myself, it was too little and too late. This isn't a bad book if you're just looking for an expanded publicity pamphlet. Anyone expecting an in-depth look at the inner workings of the world's largest ocean liner (which I'd expect from the Haynes name) is going to be disappointed.I heard Stephen Payne speak on the QM2 in 2013. The story about how he became a naval architect is interesting. I gave this book as a gift for my cruise companion who thought it was great as well.http://www.creatgroup.com/userfiles/image/2020/12/kfis20xvms-manual.xml
Includes photos and details about parts of the ship you normally do not see.He gives the reader a complete overall view of this magnificent ocean liner (the last to be built). Many interesting details keeps you turning the pages. Excellent photos and diagrams. The only fault is the miniscule deckplan in the tour section. Even with this small oversite - This is a book to treasure as written by the man who designed and help build this last true ocean liner of our time. The story of this ship is well done. I really like this book.Great pictures and commentary along with a bit of history made this a very good read!Exploded views were great. This doesn't go into much technical detail or have many technical illustations. Much of the book is concerned with the planning and building and a lot of historical content on Cunard and the other Queens. Most of the photographs are very small and not all of a professional quality. There are much better books on the Cunard fleet. There are a few pages covering the sea trials and the installed equipment which were interesting. So unusual for a book to be written by the designer, well done.An ideal present for anyone interested in ships or who has cruised on the QM2. Jared John 5.0 out of 5 stars Learn about the ship, see what it looks from the inside, imagine what you would do while spending a week on an Atlantic Crossing, and dream about the day you can afford it. Excellent quality book filled with pictures and interesting information.http://www.pierreseche.fr/userfiles/kfis25xvms-manual.xml
Well supported by photographs but really an insiders look into the interplay between engineering and commercial decisions, from conception to service The time-line is up to about 2014 so does not include the 'remastering' and its pluses and minuses. This doesn't go into much technical detail or have many technical illustations. The editors will have a look at it as soon as possible. They advised him to instead study chemistry and he enrolled at Imperial College London.
He placed the new ship's public spaces near the water line. This allowed for a premium fare balcony, rather than porthole, cabins to be placed in the hull yet high enough to have a margin of protection from the sea conditions of the north Atlantic. Payne also created more revenue-producing interior space by removing one engine room from the initial design and instead using gas turbines at the base of the funnel. Podded propulsion, rather than shaft drives, was used to free up even more interior space and offered greater fuel efficiency and maneuverability. Carnival's later newbuild contracts would stipulate podded propulsion as they offered fuel savings and superior maneuverability compared to traditional shaft drives. In 2003 he was invited to deliver the MacMillan Memorial Lecture to the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland.Retrieved 16 December 2020.
